About Us

Dr. Suraiya Ismail, Chair of the Step by Step Fundation’s Executive Committee, is a public health nutritionist and educator, with extensive international experience working in key academic institutions and international agencies. Her introduction to autism was recent and arose out of her efforts to find assistance in Guyana for the mother of a child with autism.

Suraiya leads the Executive Committee consisting of the Deputy Chair, the Secretary, Ms. Juanita Mangal, the Treasurer, Mrs. Christine Decambra-Forrester, members Mrs. Cynthia Massay (works with the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre in Georgetown), Mrs. Marilyne Trotz, and our US-based consultants Ken Brooks, Dr. Jim Ellis, and Dr. Kerry Davis.

About Us

Dr. Jim Ellis is a US-based consultant and psychologist who is an expert in autism and the Applied Behaviour Analysis approach to autism treatment. His engagement with autism in Guyana began in 2008, before the establishment of our Foundation and School. Dr. Ellis has trained all of our tutors, and continues to monitor their performance and the progress of the children. He visits Guyana at least three times a year to oversee activities at the School and to diagnose children referred to us by doctors and teachers, and provides ongoing clinical oversight and supervision through regular internet consultation sessions. He also fundraises for us in Boston and at the international autism outreach/conference networking level. He is a founding member of Step by Step Guyana and a member of our Executive Committee.

Dr. Kerry Davis, a speech-language pathologist based in the USA, joined the Step by Step team more recently, in 2013. Dr. Davis holds a Bachelor and Master Degrees in Speech Pathology, and a Doctorate degree in Education. Dr. Davis is an ASHA certified speech-language pathologist, with a specialization in augmentative alternative communication, and working with children who have complex communication profiles. She visits Guyana 2 – 3 times a year, and collaborates with Dr. Ellis to monitor the progress of tutors and children, and to provide training for tutors and parents.

Ms. Jen Stornelli is a Master in Occupational Therapy and holds a BA in Psychology. She currently works as Clinical Supervisor and Pediatric Occupational Therapist at Spaulding Outpatient Center for Children in Massachusetts, USA.

Mr. Ken Brooks has been a functional manager, enterprise project manager, and project management consultant for almost 30 years in the health care, higher education, government, and financial services industries. He helps the Step By Step school with its business management, IT, and fundraising needs. Ken holds a Masters degree in Business Administration and holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science and History. He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and is Vice-President of Finance and Administration for our U.S partner, Step By Step Behavioral Solutions.
